Fitness Activities Cape Town
Trail Running in Newland Forest
The network of shaded paths zigzag along the less famous side of Table Mountain. Here temperatures are cooler, and the vegetation is lusher, with forests instead of fynbos. Entrance is free, and you can expect to meet loads of fitness enthusiasts, dog walkers and families along the way.
Rent a Bicycle
Chat to Once Reception about hiring a bike and cycle the city. Or dare to head a little further afield to climb the steep Kloofnek over to Camps Bay, or cover the long cycle lane that darts past the various Blouberg beaches and lets you in on picture perfect views of Table Mountain.
Laps at the Sea Point Public Pools
For just R30, you can get a refreshing workout at the sparkling Sea Point pools. The Olympic-size swimming pool shoulders the crashing waves of the Atlantic, making it a truly unique place to do a few laps. Early mornings are best for uninterrupted training sessions as recreational swimmers will start splashing about as the day gets hotter.
If you’re staying at Once, you’re automatically invited to our weekly free Yoga session on the beach. Stretch it out at sunset with a slow flow led by one of our CEOs. We have other free activities too.
A Surf Session
Surfing, or learning to do so, is an excellent way to get a workout and have fun, all at the same time. Muizenburg is one of our favourite spots. No need to bring anything along, you can rent everything you need when you get to the beach, and get a lesson too if needed. Chat to Once reception about the details.
With Once being just at the foot of Table Mountain, there are loads of hikes just an Uber ride away. One of the most famous is Lion’s Head, a steep but speedy climb that offers great views and only takes a slice out of your day. For more hiking routes around South Africa, check out this blog post.
There are a few gyms across the city where you can use the array of gym apparatus and get your sweat on. You’ll find these circuits on the Sea Point Promenade, in Greenpoint Park and in Gardens just below De Waal Park.
The Sea Point Promenade is a hub of health to Capetonians. It’s where people go for runs, walks, cycle, skate and surf. The big lawn that shoulder the boardwalk are also used for casual soccer games. Choose your mode of exercise and get your heartrate pumping.
