EDUCATIONAL TOUR 2019

SA HISTORY AND POLITICS

1. Jan Smuts Museum - Pretoria

The Smuts House Museum seeks to represent faithfully the life-style and multi-facetted career of one of South Africa's greatest sons, General J. C. Smuts, and to promote the holistic vision which he expounded in his life and writings.

He was a South African statesman, military leader, and philosopher. In addition to holding various cabinet posts, he served as prime minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 until 1924 and from 1939 until 1948.

POLITICAL HISTORY & ARCHITECTURE

Pretoria is a capital city of South Africa and therefore full of historic sites. Visit the Union Buildings, headquarters of the government. The buildings are beautifully situated in terraced gardens, where you can enjoy an idyllic walk through. Next, visit the Voortrekker Monument representing Afrikaner Nationalism. It is of great significance to many Afrikaans speaking South Africans. The interior walls depict the story of the Great Trek, a mass movement of Afrikaner Boers who resented British rule. Next up, visit the Paul Kruger House Museum. Learn more about this fascinating man and why Kruger National Park was named after him. Throughout the trip the architectural character in Pretoria's buildings will be touched on.

APARTHEID HISTORY

Translated from the Afrikaans meaning 'apartness', apartheid was the ideology supported by the National Party government and was introduced in South Africa in 1948. Apartheid called for the separate development of the different racial groups in South Africa. Apartheid made laws that forced different racial groups to live separately and develop separately, and grossly unequally too.

The Apartheid Museum illustrates apartheid and the 20th century history of South Africa. The Museum allows visitors to experience the racial segregation that occurred during apartheid by separating them by racial appearance classified by the width of the nose, the kinks in hair, skin pigmentation, and size of lips as well as the language they spoke an most ultimately their race.
